I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan
By Rita Watson

The book “I Know What You Did Last Summer” by Lois Duncan features a small town girl named Helen Rivers. Helen is one of four main characters that live perfect lives, they all have good looks and are the best of friends, but something pops up that could turn Helen and her friends’ lives from perfect to tragic.
Helen is a very pretty with long blonde-brown hair. She was very good looking. Her family was lower middle class. She couldn’t get many things so she used her good looks to get by. She wasn’t very good in school either.
Helen and her three friends went to a party and got a little drunk. As they were driving home they hit a 10 year old boy on a bicycle. They called the police from a pay phone, but didn’t tell the police they hit the boy. They made a pact not to tell anyone, Helen was against this. She wanted to tell the police she did it but she knew her friends would have been really mad at her if she did, so she didn’t confess. A year later they 4 friends started getting letters saying “I know what you did last summer.” They were being stalked by the little boy’s brother. Helen was the first person to be stalked, she got letters and one time he even confronted her. He also started to threaten her and her other friends.
Helen doesn’t change much towards the end. She doesn’t change because she is killed.
She is killed by the stalker. Helens friends were also killed the same night.
In the book “I know what you did last summer” Helen and her friends lived with a major secret and in the end suffered the consequences of not telling anyone. Helen had an important role in the book because she was the only one who ever really cared or had sympathy for what they did.
