Underage Drinking
Underage drinking
Drinking is bad enough and harmful to your body, but can be even more harmful to a developing body such as a child or teen. This paper is an opinion on underage drinking and the dangerous ways they it can hurt you and others around you.
Drinking can be harmful to a teen because their body is still developing and not ready for the chemicals in alcohol. The first reason is that the developing teenage body has immature organs still and can easily get alcohol poisoning. This could result in an organ transplant and could keep you in the hospital for weeks, even months ("Examples of Alcohol's Effect on Organ Function."). Another reason alcohol is harmful to the body is that it can give you severe brain damage. Brain damage can affect your social life, work ethics, and how you do in school. The last reason that alcohol is harmful to the body is that if you drink too much your breathing could get slower and sometimes even stop ("ALCOHOL'S DAMAGING EFFECTS ON THE BRAIN"). “The more alcohol advertising kids are exposed to, the more likely they are going to drink, and drink heavily. We have stronger and stronger research showing there is a link to advertising”-David Jernigan.
Watson 2
Alcohol can not only harm you inside your body, but can also harm others. The first way that you can hurt others is becoming drunk. Becoming dunk can cause you to be moody such as angry. When your angry u sometimes start fights, fights could become bad and others can get hurt. Another way is drunk driving (“how Bar Fights Start”). Drunk driving is a big problem in the U.S.A. 40% of car crashes this year in the U.S.A involved teens under the influence of alcohol. Car crashes can severely hurt or kill people, resulting in jail time for the teen. Teens also get caught with DUI’s, drinking under the influence, and DWI, driving while intoxicated, and these are common charges against teens. (“Teenage Drunk Driving Risks”). “Today’s underage drinker is tomorrow’s drunk driver.”- David DeIuliis from Communications at Mothers against Drunk Driving. The last reason isn’t very common but does happen. It is swimming and drinking. Four out of 10 teens that have drowned have been drinking and swimming. Teens that swim and drink run the risk of getting killed. (“Deaths from Underage Drinking |The Cool Spot.”).
Another harmful and huge problem is unprotected sex while under the influence of alcohol. Every 2 babies per 100 babies are born from teens under the influence of alcohol. Teens that drink alcohol are seven times more likely to have sexual intercourse than teens who avoid using alcohol. This is a big problem because the parents are teenagers and usual cannot support or take care of the baby. Another reason why this is bad is because the baby can be born with defects because of the alcohol (Kite).
Underage drinking can be caused by family members. Over seven million children currently live in a family where one parent is an alcoholic. 61% of adults say they had an alcoholic beverage, but 31% percent say they have had five or more drinks in one day of that year. Children and teens live with a parent that is addicted to alcohol are more likely to grow up as addictive drinkers (Wardell).
Most teens that are caught drinking are addicted to alcohol and probably drugs. Teens that are caught with alcohol are probably addicted and need help. Getting caught could be a good thing because then you can get medical help. Most teens think they can become not addicted by themselves, but the best way is to get help and learn to not be addicted ("Dealing With Addiction.").
The conclusion to all of this is that even though drinking is sometimes good, children and teens should still never drink under the drinking age.

Summer Reading
Rita
Dramarama
By: E. Lockhart
The Book:
1. The main character’s name is Sarah Paulson. Sarah’s characteristics are that she is theatrical, creative, but lacks self-confidence.
2. The beginning is about how Sarah and her best friend Demi get into Wildewood
Academy for the Performing Arts, Summer Theater Institute. They are leaving
“Frazzle-Dazzle deprived” Benton, Ohio.
In the middle of the story Sarah and Demi are in many shows and acting
classes. But, Sarah starts to realize that she isn’t as good at acting as Demi, or any
of her other friends. Demi gets lead roles, her three roommates get lead roles,
and her roommates have all been in multiple Broadway shows. This upsets Sarah
and often makes her feel inadequate.
Towards the end, many things go wrong for Sarah. The first thing is that she talks
behind her friend’s back and the friend finds out causing Sarah to loose this
friend, and many others. What is really an issue for Sarah is that she gives her
opinions during classes and rehearsals which makes the teachers loose respect for
her. Sarah’s opinions are very critical and she appears controlling. The last, and
probably the biggest thing, was that Sarah and Demi were caught with alcohol and
they both got in trouble. They were both going to be sent home. But Sarah took
the blame so that Demi could stay at camp.
3. In this novel I think the author is trying to say that your best doesn’t always feel good enough. When you lack self-confidence and are jealous of others it is hard to feel good about yourself and others.
The Issues:
1. Sarah Paulson:
• Sarah spoke her mind and her opinions were disrespectful at times. She
made the teachers loose respect for her, and her classmates angry.
• Sarah talked meanly about her friend behind her back. Her friend found out and did not want to be friends any longer. Others heard about this and didn’t want to be friends with Sarah either.
• Sarah took the blame when she and Demi were caught with alcohol. A risky move. She was kicked out of the program. She was selfless for Demi’s sake. Sarah learned how to be a friend and put someone else first.
2. Social Issues That Seem Real and Important:
• Sarah and Demi were caught drinking alcohol and Sarah suffered the consequence. In the book the under age drinking relates to real life because teens struggle with this issue. There are heavy consequences to drinking under age. You can be thrown out of school and activities, you could be arrested, or you could get sick.
• Sarah realized that Demi and her other friends were getting leading roles in the plays at camp and she was not. Sarah lacked self-confidence and felt inadequate compared to everyone else. This is common in real life. Especially with girls. It happens because girls feel like they are not as pretty as other girls, or as talented, or don’t have the right kinds of clothes like other girls, causing them to lack confidence in themselves.
Social Issue That Seems Immediate and Personal:
The author takes the big issue of relationships and a teen girl’s struggle to fit in by showing how Sarah is affected by her own jealousy and being overly critical of others. Sarah used a tape recorder to talk about her friends behind their backs. Once they found out they were no longer friends with Sarah and she felt alone. Sarah’s jealousy and feelings of inadequacy got her in trouble.

Dear Sayde,
Hi my name is Rita. I liked reading about your adventure at Wildwood Academy for the Preforming Arts. I am a freshman at John Carroll High School. I live in Forest Hill, Maryland. I know your summer has been just okay, but I have been doing exciting things too. I went to Puerto Rico, and island couple miles of the coast of Florida, and I also went to Ocean City, Maryland. Ocean city has beaches and a boardwalk with rides, games, and my favorite shopping. It was a really fun summer.
I liked reading about your experiences at Wildwood. I know you probably didn’t have the greatest time there because you got kicked out, but the concept of the camp sounds fun. I liked how you pointed out how your town was ‘razzle-dazzle deprived.’ The switch from Brenton, Ohio to Wildwood must have been totally different for you and Demi. I was surprised that you and Demi weren’t good friends towards the middle and end.
I liked how the reader described your surroundings and your family before the story really started. I didn’t like the way the author told us about your lessons in acting and dancing before he mentioned that you were and actress. It was weird because you really weren’t expecting it and it kind just hit you with a surprise.
I would like to know why you didn’t give it your all when you were in auditions. You seemed timid and scared. I understand being nervous but always give it your all.
In this novel there were many issues you dealt with. The first was the jealousy and talking behind your friends back. There were many consequences that you suffered just like when you talked behind Nanette’s back and she found out our almost lost each other friend ship. I would also like I point out the troubles and consequences of teen drinking. You got in a lot of trouble for the drinking on top of the boys’ dorm, and you were kicked out. I say wait till your old enough to drink or you could seriously get hurt or sick.
I hope you got this letter and would like to remind you to stay out of trouble. I think you should still chase your acting dreams. Have fun in Ohio.
Sincerely,
Rita

About me
Hi, my name is Rita . I went to St. Margaret’s and middle school and now I am a freshman at John Carroll school. I am very unique in many different ways. I play basketball for John Carroll’s fall basketball team, and it is a lot of fun. I am also into pop, hip hop, and rap music. My favorite rappers are Lil’ Wayne, Eminem, and Drake. I am also fan of football. Though many people like the Baltimore Ravens, I like the Pittsburgh Steelers. My mom is a Steeler’s fan and my dad is a Ravens fan, so it gets pretty hectic around the house when football season comes. This year at school I would like to get good grades, play on the winter basketball team, and participate in class more. Those are the things that make me unique.
